Terminology

Accusation – The honor (or dishonor) of being recognized in circle to do a down-down

Are You – Call out to see if someone is on trail – return calls are “Looking” or “ON-ON”

Circle – Beginning or Ending assembly of a hashing or running event

Down-Down – Drinking whatever and as much as you want. Your first time, you’ll be given a drinking vessel that you fill with as much as you want to drink and will drink it all down

FRB (Front Running Bastard) – The first person to finish the trail

Grand Master (GM) – Mismanagement member who is the leader of mismanagement and, cerimonially, of the kennel

Hash Cash – The covercharge for doing a trail

Hare(s) – Person or people responsible for marking a trail

Hasher – Any member of the hash house harriers

Hashing – The act of doing a hash house harriers trail

Hounds – The group of hashers that are following the hare(s)’ trail

Kennel – An entire Hash House Harriers group – Example: ICH3 is 1 of 5 hashing kennels in Pittsburgh

Looking – Response to “Are You” indicating that you are looking for trail markings

Mismanagement – The collective body of elected hash house harriers officers to oversee a kennel’s operation

On-On – Shouted as a response to “Are You” or to the entire group signaling that you have found the “true trail” – typically 3 sequential markings indicates a true trail

RA (Religious Adviser) – Mismanagement member normally in charge of blessing the hash and settling disputes over tradition; sometimes in charge of down-down ceremonies

“Race”-ist – A term for people who treat hashing as a race (Ex: Shitty Situation has been FRB the past 5 trails, what a race-ist). Also refers to anything related to racing (shirts from running events, discussing running or other athletic events, talking about your times, etc.) It’s all in good fun!

Shiggy – General term for the woods, but more specifically the thorns/bushes/brambles/rivers or any other part of nature that’s working against you on trail

Tradition – Euphemism for “Rule”
