Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve heard of hashing before - aren’t you a drinking club with a running problem

Our history certainly started around drinking, and we host beer stops and have beer or other alcoholic drinks available at our events. However, you can hash or be a hasher and practice sobriety - all of our drinking ceremonies will just involve water or a beverage of your choice instead. Our goal is to be inclusive and celebrate everyone’s individual choices as long as they’re not yucking anybody else’s yum

How long are your events?

Hashing and running events vary in length and are totally at the discretion of the hare. However, we try to target between 3-5 miles as the “True” or “Correct” trail (1 hour in length for the average person). For our running club events, that distance is covered without stopping. For our hashing events, there is typically a stop every 1-2 miles where everyone regroups and chats/has a beverage of their choice (3 hours in length for the average person). Faster runners or those of you who can’t find trail very well may cover more mileage.

What’s with these nicknames like TLC, Plea Barkin, and Beats?

In the hashing events, and the hashing events only (Sorry run club, big kids only), after you have attended enough trails you will inevitably do something stupid and worthy of a nickname or we will call you into our circle and ask you all sorts of questions. We really just want to get to know you so that we can give you a great name ;-]. From that day forward you will be given a necklace with your name on it that you will be expected to wear at all hashing events and you will henceforth be called that name for the duration of a hashing event. Calling you by your actual name is referred to as your “Nerd Name”

Someone told me you people drink beer out of a shoe?

  1. What do you mean by “you people” o.0?

  2. There is a tradition that if you come to the hash with BRAND-NEW shoes that we will give you an opportunity to “christen” them by drinking a beer out of them. However, it is not required.

I’m not very active, do you think I could do it?

Hell yes! The hash is about welcoming everyone of every activity level. We have people as young as their 20s and as old as their 80s that do our trails. We celebrate and encourage our community’s age diversity. So if an 80 year old person can walk it, I bet you can too. Bet on yourself

I don’t think I could remember or follow the marks, what happens if I get lost?

For our running events - just go back to start, have a drink while you wait for us to come back, and grow from the shame.

For our hashing events - see running events final point

Do I have to hare one day?

No… but it would be really cool if you did at some point - sign up here

Do I have to sign a waiver?

We don’t require it yet, but don’t be that asshole that makes us need to. The choice to do a trail is entirely your own, we expect all attendees to understand common sense things like looking both ways when crossing the street, taking the path that meets your physical ability, brushing your teeth (please god), and drinking responsibly
